It was Akira Alemany (vocals, guitar) from Modernboys Moderngirls who let me know they were putting together a night at The Horseshoe and were going to be playing with Oh No Forest Fires and Dinosaur Bones, two bands that I've seen before and will very happily see again (even more so now, see below). Also on the bill was Everything All The Time, a band which I knew nothing about, except that I liked their name.

When I found out Semi Precious Weapons were playing an event called CraveFest, the first thing I did was Google the term and discovered that CraveFest is actually an online international videos awards festival. The whole thing culminates in an awards ceremony that appears to be held mid-August every year. This year was the 2nd awards ceremony and was hosted by Korey Schaefer and Tanya Blake, and included performances by Amos The Transparent, Webster Death, Hexes & Ohs, The Flatliners, and Semi Precious Weapons.

To celebrate 8 years on 102.1, Dean Blundell and the morning crew decided to throw a party featuring four great Canadian punk bands: The Flatliners, Die Mannequin, The Saint Alvia Cartel, and The Salads. It went exactly as advertised with plenty of sausage, both on and off the BBQ. When I arrived, the crowd was outside enjoying beers and sausages in the sun, but it wasn't long before the skies turned dark and the rain came pouring down. Fortunately, the Sound Academy was well prepared and was able to easily move everyone inside a little earlier than planned, to the area where the bands were scheduled to play.
Each band was interviewed by Martin Streek for air on 102.1 and two songs from each set went live-to-air (see the full set of photos for some interview pictures).

Since the release of At The Command Of The Blanket Sky in March by Kitchener-based Vacuity, I've been listening to it with steadily increasing frequency, causing it to be in my top 10 weekly listening charts more than a few times over the past couple of months. Like any great album, there are some songs that caught me right away (e.g. Beckoning), but it was the more complex songs (e.g. Tamer Than Anything) that grew to be my favourites after repeated listens. Only time will tell, but I suspect this album will be part of my listening playlists for many years to come.

I'm not sure if I had heard of Public before learning about the show last Thursday. It's a band name that sounded generic to me and so it's possible I had just forgotten the name. But now that I've seen them live, the name has changed meaning... less like the noun, as in ordinary people, and more like the adjective, as in something that is available to all people. Also on the bill, Whisky Foxes, and a singer-songwriter Iain Nabil.

Sometimes two bands come together on a bill that are unrelated, but the presence of both of them is the draw. For me, having both Low Level Flight, and B & The North playing the same night was the perfect way to close out the rainiest July I can remember. read more (381 words)

On the night of his birthday, Joshua Bartholomew hosted an evening of music in the back room of the Supermarket. The night started with Joshua, Serena Pruyn and Nick Lesyk from Oliver Black, and Trevor Howard taking turns playing acoustic numbers. Then after a short break, Joshua returned with his band and performed a full set. I guess if you love what you do, performing on your birthday and entertaining your friends is as good a way as any to celebrate.

Continuing my goal to catch and photograph We Are The Take as regularly as possible this year, I found myself at the Tattoo Rock Parlour again for one of their shows. The 6ixty 8ights were scheduled to open the night, a local band that I've been trying to get out to see for a while, and in between the two was The Darcys.
